Greta Gerwig's directorial debut Lady Bird picked up four nominations - though, interestingly, Gerwig herself was not nominated for Best Director. Lily Collins and Tessa Thompson announced the nominations at a ceremony in West Hollywood.

Chosen by the non-profit arts organization Film Independent, the Spirit Awards traditionally have not been seen as a great Oscar predictor, though in recent years Moonlight, Spotlight and Birdman all snagged Spirit Awards for Best Picture before going on to win the Oscar in the same category.
